Reflective film is a type of retroreflective material that has been made into a film for direct application, and it is also the most widely used retroreflective material. In 1937, the world's first reflective film was born in a laboratory in the United States. This marked the beginning of the large-scale application of reflective film in traffic signs. In 1939, a sign made of reflective film was used for the first time outdoors along a highway in Minnesota, USA, opening a new era of reflective products for traffic signs and creating a brand new traffic safety industry. That year, the national standard for traffic signs in the United States (1939 edition of the Manual of United Traffic Control Devices) officially stipulated that reflective film should be used to manufacture traffic signs.
Since then, with the development of the chemical industry, especially synthetic resins, various research and development institutions have continuously innovated, utilizing glass bead technology, synthetic resin technology, film technology, and coating technology, successively developing a series of high-quality retroreflective products.
Starting in the 1940s, the initially manufactured reflective film was named "engineering grade" reflective film and began to be widely used in road traffic signs. Subsequently, a series of products such as reflective films used in personal safety protection fields like clothing were developed along with the advent of synthetic resins and the needs of social development. Following this, with a series of research results in material science and optical technology, especially the emergence of microprism reflective materials, the initially traffic sign-focused reflective materials began to be gradually replaced by newer and better reflective materials.
